NEW YORK - August 11, 2026 - Rockstar Games today announced that the release of Grand Theft Auto VI has been postponed to coincide with the launch of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 6 console.
The decision follows an internal review of the game’s technical ambitions. Rockstar says the additional development time will allow the team to take advantage of next-generation hardware and deliver the level of detail, simulation and performance originally envisioned for Grand Theft Auto VI.
“We understand that fans have been waiting a very long time, and delaying the game was not a decision we made lightly,” Rockstar Games said in a statement. “However, after working closely with our technology partners, we believe GTA VI deserves to launch on hardware capable of delivering the experience without compromise.”
Previously announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions have consequently been cancelled.
The revised release plans will be formally detailed during Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look , the upcoming special presentation on Netflix. The presentation will offer an extended look at the game while outlining Rockstar Games’ transition to next-generation hardware and the reasons behind the revised launch strategy.
